When we reviewed the Purim story (in Megillat Esther) we discussed how Esther hid her Jewish identity when she first entered the palace. She only revealed it later when Mordechai asked her to intervene on behalf of the Jews who were in harm's way. (By the way, the name "Esther" comes from the same shoresh/root as the word "to hide." Note that we also "hide" behind masks and costumes on Purim).
Most of us act like Esther at some point. When do you hide your identity, and when do you display it proudly?

Ithink we should not show show are idenity if we are scared or if we are not comfterable we should show our idenity in places we are comfertable
Whenever I meet somebody, I don't just out of the blue say that I'm Jewish. If somebody asks me, I'll tell them. If I met somebody who was against Jews, or I just felt plain uncomfortable around them,I would not tell them
Interesting comments. I wonder if the first person purposely kept his/her identity a secret out of discomfort, or if he/she just clicked on anonymous by accident :)
So, would you ever consider wearing a kippah in public?
I don't think I'd where a kippah in public. I am proud that I am Jewish, but I do not think that I have to where a kippah to show it.
Necklace with a Jewish star or Chai?
It's actually pretty cool being a jew in some of my classes. There are a few other jews, and if we are talking about jewish stuff we always know what we are talking about. So no, I don't really care if people know I'm Jewish, although it does get a bit awkward around christmas time...
i might wear a jewish star necklace or something like that.
i agree with helen 2. i like 2 meet other jewish people because then it's like we have so many things in common, like what we get for chanukkah, when our bar/bat mitzvahs are, etc.
I think it's great that you are in a school environment with students from many backgrounds. My experience was different - only Jewish Day Schools until college. (I'm not saying that is bad). Do you find that most of your close friends in class are Jewish, or a total mix?
I do have a few close friends who are Jewish, but I also have friends of other religions. I guess that everyone in our class has at least one or two other close friends that our Jewish, but you also meet other Jewish people, and people of other religions at school, camp, or other activities.
I have never hidden who I am from the world at any time in my life. If someone has a problem with my being Jewish, then too bad for them. To me, Judaism is a part of who I am, and I would never want to hide it.
