Jews in sports...and politics

Shahar Peer (the women's tennis star) is one of the Israeli athletes who came up in our discussion of Jewish sports organizations (e.g. Beitar, the 1987 soccer champions!) We all like to cheer for Jewish and Israeli athletes. I wondered if that same feeling of pride extended to political candidates.
Are you more likely to support a candidate for office if he/she is Jewish or supports Israel?
Should this be a major factor in how we (or our families) vote?

I think that it is a big factor if a candidate is Jewish. Of course what he/ she would plan to do in office is important, but personally I would lean toward the Jewish candidate. I guess that I would relate to him/ her a little more than a candidate of another religion. Also, he might enforce a law or act that would affect me or other Jewish people.

I agree with Heather, but I would stress the fact that it depends what they would do in office. If there was ever a person running for president that was against Jews I definitely would NOT vote for them. But if they were he for America and were Jewish then by all means I would vote for them.

I agree with Elise (who agrees with me! :))

I think that if a candidate is saying things like "if I win, I am going to destroy Israel" then I'd say NOT TO VOTE FOR HIM (OR HER)! But if he has other issues on his or her mind like helping the homeless or something like that, and it doesn't have to do with harming Israel whatsoever, I don't see why he'd be a bad candidate.

I definitely agree with Saul. Just because a person is Catholic or something, it doesn't make him any better or worse a candidate if he was Jewish.
